TUNING IN AND MAKING CONNECTIONS.

The hardest aspect of the process for me so far is trying to have my students think differently and start to make connections.

They seem to get stuck in just giving me the obvious answers, with little detail and one to two word statements.

This week we are going to make our focus on elaboration. I want them to start thinking of multiple viewpoints and to start challenging their previous ideas.

I have really enjoyed being part of the Ron Ritchhart Making Thinking Visible PL over the last three weekends. Even though it was a really early start!!! I have started to make connections in the way I'm thinking and my approaches to inquiry.

I only have my Year 4 Enrichment students for 60 minutes this week but want to challenge myself to get through a new routine and to engage them in a new Tech Tool.

I've chosen the CONNECT, EXTEND, CHALLENGE routine. (Ron Ritchhart: The Power of Making Thinking Visible pg 221 and Kath Murdoch: Thinking Routines (The Power of Inquiry: Study Guide)

The provocation is going to be an 8min David Attenborough You Tube clip Save my Planet

We are going to explicitly look at what good connections are, to begin with. I'll have some examples and the class will rate them from powerful to superficial.

They will then complete individually the following:

We will come together in small groups to discuss our connections and work together on the EXTEND and CHALLENGE sections ended with the group creating a posing WHY question to complete the task that we will display and give opportunities to respond to at a later date.

We are also going to end the task having a go at a padlet and 'fingers crossed' I'm going to see how the students are starting to elaborate their answers and to make connections.

The following questions will lead us into the action area of our project for the coming weeks. Whereby we have guest speakers coming out to talk from Narc Dive https://www.facebook.com/9NewsPerth/videos/193842599242906 , Nearer to Nature https://www.dpaw.wa.gov.au/get-involved/nearer-to-nature/schools, and NRM https://www.perthnrm.com/resource/educational/

The groups chosen action activity was to participate in a coastal planting activity on the Ikula beachfront which has been arranged with the City of Joondalup.

Focus Questions:

Take notes thinking about these questions.

What is one issue David Attenborough is discussing?

What can humankind do to make changes?

How did watching this make me feel?

What action do I think I could take?

What questions or ideas do I have to share?

CRITIQUE.

Peer Assessment and Reflection.

As this was our last group work activity before moving to our individual investigations I thought we would conclude with a peer assessment and reflection.
